Denton Reads Events: Lecture by Author Orson Scott Card, TWU Library film screenings, and more

As part of this years Denton Reads, bestselling author Orson Scott Card will be at Denton’s Guyer High School Gymnasium on Saturday, October 18th at 4pm to talk about his book Ender’s Game. There will be a book signing afterwards. The event is free to the public.

In conjunction with the author event, the Denton Reads Film Festival Committee have scheduled a free screening of City of Ember at the Denton Cinemark 14 on Saturday, October 11 at 10:30 am.  Also, the TWU Library will host four films:


  • Ray Bradbury: An American Icon (10/2 at noon)

  • Six Days in Roswell (10/6 at 7:00) & Trekkies (10/6 at 8:30)

  • The acceleration of technology in the 21st century: the impact on education and society (10/9 at noon)

  • Martian Child (10/13 at 7:00, following the Ender's Game book discussion)

Denton Reads presents Orson Scott Card at an Author Visit and Book Signing

The Denton Reads selection for 2008 is Ender’s Game by bestselling author Orson Scott Card. Card is best known for his science fiction novels but he has written in other forms and genres. Ender’s Game is about a young boy, Ender Wiggin, who is one a group of children recruited for military training by the world government. Ender proves to be a “tactical master”, a “genius among geniuses” at the Battleschool . How will Ender perform in real combat against the alien “buggers” who are set to destroy all humankind? After all, he is only a child.

Mr. Card will be at Denton’s Guyer High School Gymnasium on Saturday, October 18th at 4pm to talk about his book and a book signing will follow. The event is free to the public.

Denton Reads announces film festival schedule and free screening of City of Ember

In conjunction with the events surrounding the book Ender’s Game, Denton Reads has scheduled 18 free film screenings that examine various science fiction themes. The Denton Reads Film Festival will run September 30 – October 15. All screenings are free and open to the community. 

The spotlight event of the festival is a free screening of City of Ember, a film adaptation of the popular juvenile fiction novel by author Jeanne DuPrau. A free screening will be held at the Denton Cinemark 14 on Saturday, October 11 at 10:30 am. Seating will be limited and available on a first come, first served basis. The film is rated PG. 

Additional free film screenings will be hosted by the Denton Public Libraries, Texas Woman’s University and the University of North Texas. Screenings include films for young adults (The Last Starfighter, War Games), documentaries (Dreams with Sharp Teeth, Trekkies) and Hollywood hits (Blade Runner, Children of Men, The Martian Child).
