Looking for Good Books to Read This Summer?

Your Next Great Beach Read May be in Our Browsing Collection

Visit the Blagg-Huey Library and check out a book from the Browsing Collection on the first floor. What is the Browsing Collection, you ask? It consists of "recreational reading" books from many popular genres--including mysteries, romance novels, sci-fi and many others.

Much of the collection has been donated by faculty, staff, students and the community. If you are interested in donating a book (in good condition) to the Browsing Collection, you can drop off your donation at the Circulation Desk (located across from the Information Desk and Reference area on the library's first floor).

The books in the Browsing Collection are available for a 2-week checkout period and can be renewed.
New books are added to the Browsing Collection on a daily basis, so be sure to come and take a look!

Hello to Super Databases, Goodbye to a Lighthouse

In what American Libraries calls "The Merger of the Century," two of the library world's largest vendors joined forces when EBSCO Publishing acquired the H.W. Wilson Company on June 2nd.

According to their joint press release, "the two long-time industry-leading vendors come together with the goal of improving services for libraries."

As a result of the merger, many EBSCO and Wilson databases will be combined to create “super databases." According to
InfoDocket, the loading of the Wilson databases has already begun. EBSCO’s goal is to have this process complete by the end of 2011, and the "super databases" are expected to debut in spring 2012. Over time, the Wilson web platform will be phased out.

The merger will have a significant impact on searches. WilsonWeb keyword searches match against their controlled vocabularies and also return results for USE FOR terms. For example, a keyword search for “Burma” also returns results for “Myanmar” (the official name of the country), because “Myanmar” is a USE FOR term for “Burma”. This functionality is being added to EBSCOhost for all Wilson and other EBSCO-owned databases. The automatic searching for USE FORs and SEE ALSOs will also be applied to EBSCO Discovery Service. 1898 was the year
Halsey W. Wilson founded the company that bore his name. The Cumulative Book Index was the H. W. Wilson Company’s first original reference; that year it sold for $1 and had 300 subscribers. Wilson started the company in Minnesota, although it later moved to White Plains and in 1917 relocated once more to its current location in the Bronx on the banks of the Harlem River. During an expansion of the building in 1929, Mr. Wilson had a lighthouse built on its roof to symbolize the company's mission: "To give guidance to those seeking their way through the maze of books and periodicals, without which they would be lost." The lighthouse became the H.W. Wilson Company's logo.

The Saturday Review once declared, "The name Halsey William Wilson is to bibliography what Webster is to dictionaries, and Bartlett to quotations."

While the EBSCO-Wilson merger will provide us with bigger and undoubtedly better databases, now is perhaps a fitting time to also acknowledge Halsey William Wilson and the fulfillment of his vision--helping many readers find their way.
